Basin modeling

2006-present

Basin modeling is an integrating technique providing holistic understanding of a geologic evolution of a sedimentary basin and petroleum systems. I built several models in the area of Santos Basin and Cabo Frio offshore Brazil on both basin and prospect scale. I contribute to the development of Shell in-house basin modeling techniques focusing on rock properties, diagenesis, pore pressure.

Exploration play development

2004-present

Development of novel geological concepts used for hydrocarbon exploration.

Automated reservoir modeling

2004-2005

Contribution to an effort in developing automated methods for incorporating monitoring production data (pressures, production rates, time-lapse seismic…) in reservoir models.

Planetary geology - Impact research

I am interested in various aspects of impact cratering process. My current activities are limited to my spare time and I focus on the development of an impact database, which was initiated during a Shell-sponsored review of the economic potential of impact events.

My previous work included:

  1. Investigation of formation and thermal history of breccia dikes from Roter Kamm, Namibia using 40Ar/39Ar analysis, Ar diffusion and thermal modeling, petrographic and magnetic work.

  1. Testing of the hypotheses of multiple impact events in late Eocene via 40Ar/39Ar dating, petrography and geochemistry of Upper Eocene microtektites and microkrystites.

  2. Stratigraphic study of lunar maria using Lunar Orbiter images, false color images and FeO and TiO maps derived from Clementine multispectral images.

  3. Multispectral microscopy imaging for petrographic studies for planetary missions.

  4. I have collaborated with a couple of students on remote sensing investigation of proposed impact structures and on modeling thermal effects of impacts on kerogene maturation.

Family history

I am reconstructing genealogical relationships among relatives I personally know and our roots. I am particularly interested in :

  1. Origin of our family name - possibly from a French soldier who stayed in Bohemia in the late 18th or early 19th century.

  2. Reconstruction of my grandfather’s underground resistance activities during the World War II.

  3. Reconstruction of our family relationship to the astronomer Zdeněk Kopal.

  4. Life of my ancestors in the wider social and historical context of their times.
